This is a scripture that has always puzzeled me a little.

In ancient Greek culture, the word for "wind" was "spirit". When I think of the wind, I think of air in motion. For example I see leaves move on a tree, and I understand that to be evidence of air in motion. The "wind" causes the leaves to move, and one can "see them move".

Jesus said that "the wind blows where it wants to, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone that has born from the spirit." (John 3: 8)

(1) We don't know the origin (starting point) of wind.
(2) We don't know the end point (termination) of wind.
(3) We only hear the sound of wind.
(4) The sound is the manifestation of air in motion.
(5) The evidence of air in motion is in its sound.

Perhaps "born again" refers to resurrection from the dead. It says in scripture (Psalm 104):

(29) You hide Your face, they are dismayed;
You take away their spirit, they expire
And return to their dust.

(30) You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground.

Perhaps rebirth (resurrection from dead) is associated with sending forth of spirit. (The body without spirit is dead...James 2: 26)

In the resurrection, folks are born not from flesh but from spirit.

"Except a man be born again, he cannot see..."

(1) So what does "see" mean? Does it mean to have "understanding" and the ability to "appraise"?

(2) Does "see" mean "to experience" righteousness, peace, and joy?

(3) What does a person "see" or even experience when dead and supine in the grave? (Ecclesiastes 9:5)
